JAZZ HEATH STUDIO
About
Hi I'm Jazz
The subject of my work is often nostalgic- influenced by places and objects that hold meaning and memory. I paint from still lifes created from treasures collected along the trails, beaches, roads and fields of my travels and my homeland.
Currently, I am shaped by plants and flowers that I care for and those grown by the farmers in my community. Flowers personify for me, the brittleness of time we have with each other and the need to capture and rejoice in those moments while we have them.
Color determines how I pursue my art. Using color swatches I have created from my materials, I match hues I see in the still life. Often I will select a neon color to juxtapose with the natural ones. I love the "punch" neons give to my work and neon reminds of me growing up in the 80s. I paint mostly wet on wet using gouache, watercolor, various pastels, charcoals, pens and pencils. Using varied line widths and marks made with a variety of tools I add grit and texture. I consider myself a mixed media unicorn- I love sundry materials for their ability to show me new ways to make marks and leave behind their messages.

Producing art helps me preserve place, people and memories that are important to me. When directed at another person, it allows me to show my feelings toward them. When teaching, art permits me to help others broaden their gifts. I strive to become a master of my craft and an expert of the materials that I use.
